Newlands Orphanage
Newlands Orphange is our main project at present and receives the majority of our funding. The centre is home to 57 children ranging in ages from 3 to 15 and is located approx 10 km from the hostel. The children attend primary school in the mornings and, then, in the afternoons, volunteers carry out extra activities and classes for the children back at the orphanage. Since beginning the project in June 2007, volunteers have raised a significant amount of money. This has funded the building of a 30 bed dormitory for the boys, new toilets and showers, a dining hall, installation of electricity and water, and the improvement of the girls’ dormitories, along with paying for basic needs such as food, school fees, clothes, medicines, and wages.
Along with daily classes and activities, volunteers are also involved with skills training, sports and health talks on Saturdays, providing English lessons to the staff, helping to improve the management and running of the orphanage and overseeing ongoing construction at the orphanage.
Another orphanage that we support is a large, well-established orphanage within Moshi town that cares for very small children and babies. Generally volunteers are asked to help tend to the basic needs of the children, to play with them and feed them.
